Definition
Untreated calcium carbonate is a fine white powder obtained by grinding limestone or natural marble without any additives or chemical coatings. It is often abbreviated as GCC (Ground Calcium Carbonate).
Properties
Color: White or light gray depending on purity.
Fineness: Available in various grades (microns or nanometers).
Solubility: Slightly soluble in water, soluble in acids.
Density: Approximately 2.7 g/cm³.
Hardness: Approximately 3 on the Mohs scale.
Untreated calcium carbonate – common uses
Plastics Industry
Used as a filler to reduce costs and improve certain mechanical properties.
However, untreated material does not adhere as well to polymers as coated material.
Paper Industry
Improves whiteness and smoothness and enhances printing.
Paints and Coatings
Acts as a filler to increase paint volume and reduce costs.
Pharmaceuticals and Dietary Supplements
Used as a source of calcium or as a filler in tablets.
Agriculture
Used as a soil acid modifier (lime) to improve soil fertility.
Animal Feed
Added as a source of calcium in poultry and livestock feed.
